Hello and welcome to our new website.
We're really glad you're here and able to find out a bit more about us. Hurley Books is a family business made up of five avid readers, including a professional librarian and a bookseller. Between us we cover a huge range of subject knowledge from early pre-religions to Manga comics and classic literature to true crime and all that lies between. We have been selling books for almost 20 years and have been selling on line since 2002. During that time we have gathered a regular clientele who come back to us time and time again. We believe there are three factors that explain our success
We have
excellent stock knowledge
We are usually the cheapest on the market
It's genuinely important to us that our customers are
happy with the service
We love what we do and take great pride in finding the right book for the right person, for selling the best condition second hand book at the best price and of getting that precious book to you as fast as possible.
Where can you find us? We have two shops, one in Mevagissey that is open all year and one at Charlestown which is open Easter to October.. Click on this link for maps of where we are. Coincidently both shops are within metres of a harbour. If we are too far away to visit you can always come to us via the web. Our stock is listed on various sites and the links below will take you directly to them. If you want to buy lots of copies, come back to us to ask for a direct quote for postage. We will nearly always be able to do better than those quoted by ABE or Amazon. Whilst you're here, have a look at our other services. My favourite is the Book Box. I can't imagine any thing nicer than opening a box, full of books, some that I've been waiting for, others personally selected for me by a professional librarian, based on my profile.
On the Move Again!
Mevagissey here we come.
From December 2006 Hurley Books finally had a permanent resting place at 3 Jetty Street, Mevagissey. It's a much bigger premises than our previous shops so we are finally able to put all of our stock on display, and I get my home back -hooray all round! We've got a gorgeous childrens' section stuffed full of bean bags and train sets and of course books so that little ones can play and read whilst bigger ones can look around the rest of the shop in some sort of semblance of leisure. Whilst we are a heart a second hand book shop we do have a small selection of new books, primarily about Cornwall but also books that would make good gifts. Once again we are right by the harbour, although this time we don't have the cracking views as the shop runs parallel to the harbour front. However as soon as you turn right out of the door a stroll of just 10 meters would leave you very wet! Map
We haven't abandoned Charlestown though, we love that little shop, so we will be back come Easter. We have to be seasonal there because the books hate the damp and the Weighbridge just can't keep out the damp over winter. Given that it's so close to the sea and is basically just a hut it's not that surprising.
And St. Austell? Well, we still want to come back but we need to find the right property. If we did come back, we will remain in Charlestown and Meva, I feel an empire building!

April 1st
Well we're in and it's stunning here (have a look at the photos)
It's small, no getting away from that but the location is stunning. Size isn't
really an issue as we have a large warehouse (home!) and are continually expanding our
stock - over 15000 items now. The benefits of being right by the sea are
obvious, of course we get lots of tourist trade but quite frankly if no one
walked in all day I would still be overlooking tall ships, watching film crews
shoot the latest Mel Gibson project, smell the sea air and hear the waves roll
back and forth. Not bad.
I hope you can also make it to our new shop; sit yourself down on the chair, pull out a book and relax. However, if you can't get here then we can still deliver all the services that we used to in our last shop plus all the ones listed on the website, just get in touch.

Hurley Books is moving to
Charlestown
April 1st.
The Past
We opened our shop on 3 North Street just over three years ago wondering whether or not St Austell needed a second hand book shop. Or indeed if we needed the hassle of a bricks and mortar business as our online business was already successful. Two years on our lease has run out and we find ourselves desperate to continue trading in a bricks and mortar business. It has been a huge success, we have enjoyed the personal contacts you build up and have found it to be a really handy venue for people to come and just chat about books, in fact St Austell is crying out for a good book shop.
Now
Over the last six months we have tried to find a larger premises in which to expand the business, we want to offer new stock, book tokens, have a larger children's and Cornish section, as well as having a quiet area for reading and book clubs. However, St Austell is going through a rather challenging time to say the least at the moment. There are so few properties available and with the constantly delayed redevelopment no more units are being built. So for now we are flying the flag and withdrawing from battle, there is no where in St. Austell for us and we are going to Charlestown.
Charlestown is a wonderful village only 3 miles from town and the site of St. Austell's original harbour and now the home of the Tall Ships. Our new property is smaller than where we currently are but at least we still have an open door. We will still run all the same services; book searches, book orders, we'll still be buying books and we'll still be chatting to our customers about the books that we all love.
We are looking forward to meeting new customers and hope that as many of our current regulars will be able to come and visit us. For the fist week of our opening we will be giving away little Easter Eggs to say hello to all our customers who have made it to the new shop. For those who find transport an issue please phone us and we'll see what we can do about getting books to you.
The future?
In the long term we really still want to expand the bricks and mortar business so we are continuing to look for larger premises.
Our move has even made it to the papers. Cornish Guardian 16th March 2006
